Is brain surgery overrated?

Posted by Andre' Savoie On June - 29 - 2009
I’m tired of hearing that things “aren’t exactly brain surgery.”

I just read an article which had alot of great information to share and ended by encouraging people to call a professional “for important things like brain surgery, parachutes and pool construction.” I thought it was great because people are always saying that whatever they are discussing “isn’t exactly brain surgery” which is, I think, an overused cliche’.

OK so maybe brain surgery is really difficult and really important. The point is not to demean brain surgery at all. Instead what I am getting at is that there are alot of really important jobs out there that, if done incorrectly, can cause serious problems.

And maybe they won’t cause you to die or have brain damage but business setbacks, financial losses and personal agony are good reasons to find someone as skilled as a brain surgeon to do your next important job.

Consider these examples – websites and swimming pools.

Websites seem simple enough. Lots of people build them in their spare time or as a “side job” for extra income. You can even build one yourself if you have the technical knowledge or can find a template builder program at Yahoo or GoDaddy (just to name a few).

But if you want your website to be found on search engines like Google or Yahoo, or you want to really impress your visitors with graphics or professional design, or if you want to market your site to potential clients – than hiring a professional to do the job makes sense.

Its the same thing with swimming pools. The process seems pretty straightforward – that is until you try it with someone who isn’t well qualified. There are many things that can go wrong and any of them can cost you a fortune with a mistake. Experience and technical skill are very important to get the job done properly and without causing emotional trauma that may lead to brain surgery later!

So while you clearly do not need to be a rocket scientist, or brain surgeon, to build a website, a swimming pool, a house or many other things – having a qualified professional do the job for you can save you serious time, agony and ultimately money.

SEO success takes time but is worth doing

Posted by Andre' Savoie On June - 25 - 2009

Today was one of those good days to be in the SEO world. You print up the reports and look at the numbers and everything is up. Site traffic is up, conversions are up and things just seem a little better.

But why isn’t it always like this? I think it has a lot to do with patience and goal setting. Marketing your business online is not altogether different from the offline world in that you have to set goals and time frames to accomplish them. You have to look at the competition level and access the amount of effort needed to get traction for your message.

Building website presence in the real world

In spite of what some “get traffic quick” companies would you have believe it’s not all that easy to just put up a website and expect great things to happen. If you are a dynamic writer or a true “thought leader” in what you do than you can cut down the time frame. Because at the end of the day people who add value to the online world are generally rewarded with traffic and links back to their sites.

But a lot of businesses owners barely have time to see their families much less spend time working on their websites. And so they make look to hire someone to work on it for them. This process does work but you need to have the appropriate partner to work with and realistic expectations.

The end result

Getting your site in front of people who are looking for what you offer is not always easy – but at the end of the day I believe it is worth it. The big picture is that people use the internet much more today than we ever imagined – and that isn’t going to change anytime soon. In fact we can only imagine how it will impact us over the coming years.

So the bottom line is that no matter where you are starting online – never lose site of where you want to finish. Depending on the age of your site and the competition level you may have different time frames and goals – but not matter what they are it’s still sweet when you finally win.

Remembering my dad on fathers day

Posted by Andre' Savoie On June - 24 - 2009

My father passed away in 2006 – so this marks the 3rd fathers day that he has been gone. And even though I have 3 children of my own fathers day always feels like a day to be a little sad.

I know lots of people don’t have great relationships with their fathers but I did. We were best friends and did everything we could together. I also had an enourmous amount of respect for my father in how he carried himself – both in family life and in business. I credit most of my success to things I learned from watching him.

So my thoughts and prayers to out to everyone who has lost a father this year. Cherish the good memories and pass on the best of what they taught you to your children. That’s the best way to keep their memories alive.

Too hot to fish?

Posted by Andre' Savoie On June - 24 - 2009

I was thinking about taking a few days off to go fishing in Venice this week but, at the risk of sounding like a ninny, its HOT! That’s the one problem with going to Venice. You run all the way down the river – get out to the rigs and THEN you can start fishing. thats a long way to go if you need to find shelter or want to get out of the sun when it starts getting hot mid-day.

My crew from our most recent trip:
Thankfully our last trip at the beginning of June had perfect weather. We went down and took the boys fishing as well as Mr. Charlie from across the street. In between Mr. Charlie’s endless complaining about rig hooks and impatient fisherman we had a nice bag of fish.
Unfortunately the electronic evidence of said trip is still in the hands of the more technologically challenged members of our crew. We have some great video of the kids catching red snapper that hopefully we will post shortly.

One of the fun parts of fishing for me is taking kids who have never fished for “big fish” before. Its always funny what they consider “big” and you have to always make sure to never call anything a “trash fish” because it’s all great to them.
This time we had a friend come with us this time who had a blast catching big snapper and even a couple of really nice redfish including one that we could keep (the others were too big).

Gas grill cooking time for chicken

Posted by Andre' Savoie On June - 5 - 2009

So much has been written about how to grill steaks on a grill its a wonder why there is so little written about how to grill chicken. Maybe its because chicken is less expensive or more common – or maybe steaks are just that much cooler?
But whatever the reason there is no excuse for messing up chicken on a gas or charcoal grill. Especially when there is good information out there about gas grill cooking time for chicken. And since we eat chicken much more often that steak you would think it would be more useful information anyway. Especially when you consider that there really isn’t anything worse than dried out, overcooked chicken.

We have published a couple of articles and web pages which include great tips like how to know when you chicken is cooked, how to account for whether or not the chicken has bones or no bones and even pre-serving tips that you can use.

Don’t forget the potatoes!

Now just because you are having chicken on the grill doesn’t mean you can’t have potatoes on the grill too! A lot of people are getting interested in how to bake a potato on a grill as an alternative to the old standby of oven baked potatoes.

I think part of the draw is that its simply something different. Let’s face it – anybody can cook a potato in the oven. And most likely the other big draw is that its grilled. It seems that natural fire makes everything taste better and that crispy, grilled texture is something that you just can’t get in the oven.

OK so you really want steak?

Well if chicken won’t do and you really want a steak than you should have no problem finding steak grilling tips on the Internet. Whether you like it rare or butterflied and well done its not hard to make steak come out tasting great on the grill.

So come on weekend warriors – fire up the grill and have at it. Sure you’ll smell like the grill when you are done but that’s what showers are for!

Financial advisors that will always take your call

Posted by Andre' Savoie On June - 4 - 2009

This last year has left many people afraid to go to the mailbox especially if they think there might be a financial statement inside. And while the ups and downs of the market seems like a bad amusement park ride -not being able to find the person controlling the park is even worse.

In my opinion the big thing that this year has taught us is that having a good financial consultant means having someone who will talk to you when times are not great. Because let’s face it – when you are upset (especially about money) you want to pick up the phone and talk to someone. And if those people won’t take your calls – or can’t give you good answers to tough questions it is definitely time to look around for another investment advisor.

I have been with FBT Investments for over 5 years and can say that through everything that has gone on -they have been out in front and proactively managing my account. They have always taken the time to answer all of my questions and concerns and have been very honest and forthcoming at every opportunity.

Now on the other hand I’ve talked to enough people to know this isn’t always the case. Like the mortgage lender who won’t return your call when the loan is denied – many people have been looking for help and been unable to get it. So if you find yourself in this situation and are looking for financial advice in New Orleans, I recommend talking to FBT Investments and find an advisor who will be there for you no matter what.

Metal copper awnings for doors and windows

Posted by Andre' Savoie On June - 3 - 2009
I have started work with a new client recently and, as luck would have it, they work in the copper business! After working with Flambeaux lighting on the copper lantern side of things I am now learning about metal copper awnings from my new friends at Crescent City Copper.

Copper awnings and copper lanterns have alot in common. You can pretty much make any shape or size you want since the patterns are cut out of single sheets of copper. And the manufacturing process is very similar – involving the cutout of the pattern, riveting or welding of the seams and deciding on a color for the copper.

Crescent City Copper has a really nice selection of copper awnings all made by hand from their facilities right here in the New Orleans area. Their pricing is very competitive and they couldn’t be nicer people – all willing to answer questions and help you find just the right piece you need.

And if copper is something you love check out their website to find other types of copper accessories such as copper weathervanes, finials and these incredibly huge and beautiful devices called cupolas – which sit on the roof of your house.

All in all you can’t beat copper for outdoor architectural uses.
