Now the Nigerian Police Force is after me too?

Posted by Andre' Savoie On May - 19 - 2010

The Nigerian Police, Really?

This may be my last blog post as today, I received an email that the Nigerian Police Force needs to know if I am dead or alive in order to process my rightful claim.  Apparently some local Nigerians presented a death certificate on my behalf and are claiming to be my beneficiaries.

Now, today’s settlement is more than my usual fortune.  This one is for almost $15 million.  I guess I’ll contact them after my noon conference call and get the paperwork started.

Who writes this stuff anyway?

The daily spam barrage never ceases to amuse me.  Well ok, some days it’s annoying as hell.  But other days it cracks me up the things people take the time to distribute out to the world.

Remember, for every garbage email like this you get, someone somewhere had to take the time to sort through your email address and write the email. Then take the time to setup all the details in the event someone actually replies back?

I often wonder if these spam emails are bad jokes or serious attempts at fraud.  I met with a client yesterday who actually called the FBI about these emails and they didn’t take it too seriously.

So I guess its back to work as in the time it took me to write this blog post I was contacted by another lawyer in Africa with even a larger settlement.  So I guess I can stop worrying about the Nigerian Police looking for me!

Anyone else tired of uninspired email spam?

Posted by Andre' Savoie On January - 29 - 2010

I don’t know about you but I’m sick of the same old uninspired email spam!

Every day I am lucky enough to get at least 50 emails from all over the world informing me of all the lucky breaks I keep catching. Overseas business deals that have made me millions of dollars, lottery winnings I have apparently never claimed, wealthy relatives who have died and left me small fortunes and so on.

Even today I just received a message from an aunt I apparently never met who is dying of cancer and needs my bank account information so she can leave me her fortune.

Wahoo I’m Rich!
Someone in Nigeria Left Me
$50 Million
So despite all of this good business and financial fortune I’m left to wonder what makes people get up in the morning and decide to create more of this same old stupid spam?
  • Are people still falling for these really bad emails?
  • Are people actually sending in their bank account information?
  • Are people really dumb enough to think they have a lost lost relative in another country who wants to leave them millions of dollars?

Give us a break, will you?

I guess every day a new sucker is born that may not have heard of email spam yet – but the the returns on this sort of digital trickery has got to be declining, right? How many times can they send out the same old story line and expect people to bite?

The other sad part is that despite all the anti-spam laws there is nothing really you can do. If you ratchet up your spam filter you wind up losing email you actually need. And if you report the spammer email they just get new ones or give your email to someone else.

So at the end of the day this seems like just an annoyance rather than a legitimate scam. Or maybe they just haven’t gotten me yet.

Well it’s time to go. I have several lottery winnings to claim today and all these little known relatives to catch up with. Wish me luck!
