Do Consumers Trust Google More Than Traditional Media?

A poll from Edelman in late 2014 found out some rather interesting news that doesn’t bode well for traditional media.

The poll discovered that online search engines such as Google were considered more trustworthy.


This trend has been occurring for several years, and the divide between how people feel about search engines and traditional media is growing. More people are putting their trust and their faith in the information they are finding online and on the social media sites.

In fact, nearly half of the people who responded to the poll said that they trusted social media for their news. This is up nearly 5% from the previous year.

The most popular way for people to learn more about businesses and to find business info was search engines.

It’s up by 2% from 2014, and it’s continuing to grow.

Traditional media outlets, such as newspapers, continue to drop. Television remained static with only 22% of polled respondents saying they were using that for their first source of information on businesses.

What Does This Mean for You?

Many businesses have known for several years now that the Internet was the way to go when it comes to advertising, increasing brand awareness, and simply gaining customers. This poll proves that it’s the case, and the Internet is only going to become more important as the years go by.

It’s only the beginning.

What does this mean for companies such as yours? Like many other businesses, increasing spending on advertising on the web, along with increasing overall web presence, is now essential.

This means several things.

First, it means that you need to have high quality content on your website and blog, and it needs to be optimized for SEO. When customers type in certain keywords and phrases, you want your company to be one of the first that shows up in the search engine results. Since people are using search engines when they are looking up business information, you have to make sure that you are always at the top of their search results.

Take a moment to consider just how long television and newspapers were the “go to” options for information and advertising. The Internet is a cheaper alternative for advertising. It’s also a technology that is easily accessible by people all over the world, allowing for instant searches and interactions.

The power of the web is still in the early stages really. Taking the time now to improve your company’s web presence is a fantastic idea… it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
