Google's Changes to Search Results Brings a Mixed Bag for Site Owners

New Changes for Google's Algorithm: Good for Users & Site Owners?

Google has made a lot of recent changes to their algorithm, and these implementations are intended to enhance the user experience. These changes include better understanding of the natural language, a decreased dependency on keywords and an overall attempt to provide users with more direct answers. The goal is to give users exactly what they’re looking for right away so that they can get the information they need without having to be redirected to multiple sites.

For users, these changes might seem like a positive thing. But for site owners, the new algorithm is a bit unsettling, mainly because it may mean less traffic to their site. Not to mention, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to land in the top ranking spots in organic searches when Google keeps tightening their conditions for website relevancy.

Google Showing Fewer Results

There’s another issue that’s being discussed as well, and this has to do with how many search results are showing up in a Google search. Organic searches are those that come up naturally in a search, and generally, Google and other search engines show about ten or more of these searches. Now, however, Google is only showing seven. Again, this is designed to give users the exact information they need, right there on the first page, without the need to be directed to other sites.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t sit well for natural SEO. You can see the findings that have been put together by SEOmoz, an SEO online marketing company. Dr. Peter J. Meyers, President of User Effect, arranged the following two graphs to show how Google is more commonly showing just seven search results.

Another Change in the Traffic Mix

While Google continues to change the traditional organic search platform, it’s up to webmasters to provide regular, relevant content, pay for AdWords, optimize image searches and enroll in Google Shopping. Yes, your site does rely on what Google has to say, and not all webmasters want Google benefiting from their placement. Only time will tell how much websites are affected by this new algorithm, but there is a silver lining, at least for internet users. Google's main objective is to improve the user experience and provide a better internet, and we can all be grateful for that.
