What is Google Plus Anyway?

Did the world really need another social media site when Google launched Google plus? Probably not; but they did it anyway.

Many people suggest that Facebook is the only real competition to Google because it had one big thing that Google didn’t. So it should come as no surprise that Google has invested heavily in developing Google Plus (+) as a rival social offering. And from the initial results, it certainly looks like a success as in only a half a year Google + has more than 62 million users.

Covering the social angle

Google has done such a good job developing its search engine, that when people talk about finding something on the internet they just tell you to “Google” it. Like grabbing a “Kleenex”, making a “Xerox” or having a “Coke,” this should be considered high praise.

Google has also done a great job developing other tools that people use everyday such as:

  • Google shopping
  • YouTube
  • Picassa
  • Gmail
  • Maps
  • Calendar
  • Documents

So as you can see, Google has remained committed to developing products for nearly every digital action we take. And by and large, they have been very successful at it. Given this track record, it should be no surprise that Google + is off and running with a strong start. Sixty-two million users is a drop in the bucket compared to Facebook's one billion users - but it's a start.

So what is Google + Anyway?

Google Plus is Google’s own social network. But instead of linking you in to other social networks you have already created, it pulls data from your Google account profile to create a unique profile separate from those you maintain on other social sites like Facebook.

The good news is you can start fresh with your profile. The bad news is you won’t have any friends when you start.

Google + asks you to organize people you know into “circles” that will identify those who you share your content with. For instance, you can designate people to be in a “friends” circle, or maybe a “business” circle. You can create as many circles as you want and call them whatever you want.

This concept of circles is one of the best features about Google+. After all, how many times have you posted something on Facebook that you wish certain people didn’t see? Having well defined circles address this issue – if you only want business contacts to see certain content you only share it with them.

Google Plus has other cool features including:

  • Share your content
  • Search through content of your friends
  • Create a hangout
  • Play games
  • Create Google+ business pages

And if there is one thing we can be sure of, it’s that there will be new features added to Google+ on a regular basis. So our suggestion is to get started now by becoming familiar with it before you’re the last one to the party!
